Nearly Weather Kiosk
A minimalist home kiosk for weather and everyday local information.
archived

Why it existed
Nearly was made for my mother at home. She was not formally educated and could not read, so using a phone to check everyday information was hard. I wanted a text-light, visual kiosk that could communicate useful local information without making her open apps, read menus, or search.
The friction it answered
NEA's 2 Hour Nowcast already had useful region-specific weather data. The missing layer was presentation: a glanceable, mostly visual display that could show whether rain was coming, so she would know when to bring in clothes drying on bamboo poles outside the HDB window. The same idea could extend to other household information, like when the next bus would arrive at the nearest stop.
What was built
A kiosk-style app that showed weather alerts for selected regions of Singapore using public weather data.
What it left behind
Archived personal project from 2016. It belongs with the older homegrown automation work rather than the national-platform thread.
